Mind spirtuality

4 Reasons why you should meditate

“The gift of learning to meditation is the greatest gift you can give yourself in this life. For it is only through meditation that you can undertake the journey to discover your true nature, and so find the stability and confidence you will need to live, and die, well” – Sogyal Rinpoche

If you want to become the best version of yourself, meditation is an essential element in this process. Meditating consistently activates certain areas of the brain that open you up to a new way of living – improvements in mood, brain function and reduced anxiety are some of the immediate benefits[1].

It’s no accident the most successful and spiritual people on this planet practice some form of mediation daily. If you are still not convinced, here are 4 reasons why you should adopt a meditation practice within your day:

  1. Quieter mind

By becoming more mindful of your thoughts, you can notice them come and go without attaching to them – this is the essence of a mindfulness practice. Take time to step back and observe the thoughts you are having, practice disassociating them as your true self and connect to the peaceful, loving part of you that is always there – silently present. When you learn to quieten the ‘monkey-mind’ you will notice a sharp increase in your ability to concentrate – thoughts begin to subside the more you allow them to come and go without attachment.

When you have a quieter mind, you experience the rhythm of the universe throughout your day.

“I have discovered that all unhappiness of me men arises from one single fact, that they cannot stay quietly in their own chamber” – Blasie Pascal

  1. Control the ego

Without unconscious thoughts distracting you throughout the day the ego has less control over your decision making. The mind has always had the quality to live in this peaceful state, however it’s constantly obscured by self-inflicted suffering created by the ego. We can expose the true nature of our mind through meditation.

The happiness that results from this is not affected by external events, you become free from the instability of the ego – you can go about your day with contentment knowing nothing outside of you can disturb your true nature.

Wayne Dyer emphasises the importance of quietening the ego – “Decide to reduce the noise level of your life. Noise is a distraction to your highest self because it keeps your ego on red alert.”

  1. Sleep better

Sometimes before bed, the mind is still active from the day’s events making it difficult to fall asleep. Even when we do fall asleep, we often wake up feeling restless and unhappy. You must pay careful attention to your thought patterns immediately before you go to bed, whatever is in your mind at this time will be used by the subconsciousness to shape your beliefs – you might sometimes notice this in your dreams.

By meditating before you sleep, you clear the mind of any distracting thoughts that may still be swirling around from the day’s events. This is the best way to ensure you wake up feeling happy, rejuvenated and ready to take on the day.

  1. Improve the lives of others

When you have a consistent meditation practice you are not only benefiting yourself but you are also positively affecting the people around you. You become less reactive during the day – you can catch yourself before your mind slips into the unconscious behaviors that have driven you in the past.

Meditation gives you the ability to stay grounded in conversations – you might find you’re not as angry, and you will notice you become more patient. Meditation will give you increased levels of peace and love and when you project this onto the world you make it and everyone experiencing it a better place.

I strongly encourage you to find a way to give the beautiful gift of meditation to yourself, when you go within, you give yourself the freedom to be at peace without judgement. Carl Jung describes his experience in deep meditation: “those inner states were so fantastically beautiful that by comparison this world appeared down right ridiculous.”

Be patient with yourself and give it time – I guarantee this practice will change your life.

With Love
